How I Wrote Three Blog Posts in One Day Without Burning Out

I always wanted to write three blog posts a day as a new workout and get ahead of my writing schedule.

I’ve written for about an hour to 90 minutes non-stop before. However, I felt like my brain turned to wack afterward.

I’ve read about writers who can write and publish more than three posts a day. My newbie writer’s mind thought, “How TF did they do that?”

These writers knew better. They scheduled breaks.

Fast Focus writer Damon Zahariades mentions how we’re not meant to work for extended periods. Our brains are not intended for it.

“Our brains are not simply designed to focus for hours on without rest.”

With that in mind, I’ve tried the Pomodoro technique. You set your timer to 25 minutes of work with short breaks in between. My problem with this method: it was way too short for me!

I increased the time to 30 minutes. The process improved, but I still felt like I haven’t accomplished anything in such a short time.

I hopped over to my old hour-long writing routine. I found myself breaking my concentration, looking at the time to see how much I had left.

I finally discovered 45 minutes was my sweet spot. Between sessions, I would reward myself with 15 minutes of reading. Zahariades also recommends 45 minutes as the maximum time for focus:

“If a time chunk is longer than 45 minutes, plan to take at least one break. Schedule multiple breaks if it spans longer than 90 minutes.”

Here was my perfect writing day. This is how I wrote three blog posts in one day with burning out.

  • Wake up
  • Yoga workout (15 minutes)
  • Writing (45 minutes)
  • Reading (15 minutes)
  • Writing (45 minutes)
  • Reading w/breakfast (15 minutes)
  • Writing (45 minutes)
  • Walking exercise (30 minutes)
  • Writing (45 minutes)
  • Reading (15 minutes)
  • Writing (45 minutes)

Somewhere between those times, I ate lunch. I didn’t even bother with dinner since I was full from drinking water all evening. Who says I need three square meals a day?

Writing Focus Tips

Here are my tips for writing all day with intense focus and no distractions.

1. Stop Writing at the 45-minute Mark

Stopping mid-sentence at the 45-minute mark leaves me an urge to write more. This is good! I reserved the aching writing urges for my next session.

2. Check E-mails Twice a Day

Most of my e-mails nowadays are writers’ newsletters and job board notifications. Nothing urgent I must open asap.

I set up my times to read e-mails at noon and six in the evening. Other times are strictly reserved for writing.

3. Create a Writing Flow

Sometime during your writing session, you get into a state of writing flow. Words pour out of you from your mind to paper like a river.

Binaural beats instantly lead me into flow. This is my favorite:

4. Silence Your Phone

Before I write, I put my phone on silent and flip the phone over. This way, I won’t see a notification pop up on my screen at the corner of my eye while I’m writing.

My scheduled breaks are the only times I check my phone.

5. Wake Up Early

If you want to get tons of writing done throughout the day, I highly recommend waking up early.

I love waking at 4 am. I have more control over my day and make the most of it. Thanks to my early bird ways, I manage to write and publish all three blog posts by the early evening. The breaks kept me energized throughout the day.

  • Write enough to establish writing flow
  • Wake up early
  • Silence your phone during your writing times
  • Listen to binaural beats or classical music to enhance writing flow

One last thing: know what you’re going to write. At least, have the headlines in front of you.

After you’ve done writing and publishing your posts, reward yourself with a good night’s sleep, video games, or your favorite snack waiting for you in the kitchen.
