How to Grab More Writing Time in Your Life

Have you ever ventured around Medium and wondered how some writers publish four times a day?

How do the most popular bestselling authors publish so many books in a year (without any ghostwriters’ help)?

You want more writing time. You want to publish a fresh new piece every day. Maybe you only want to complete a daily 1,000 words. Darn it; you just want to write!

We all have the same 24 hours (even the divine Queen Beyoncé).

Here’s how to grab more writing time in your life:

Write Early

Adjust your alarm clock to wake up earlier than you’re used to. You don’t have to do a Wahlberg and wake up at 2:30 am.

If you wake up at 7 am, try 6 am. Wake up at 6 am, do 5 am. Go as far back as long you’re comfortable with the schedule.

Waking up early gives you the chance to write before the sunrise, your bouncy kids, and your spouse, who demands their morning McDonald’s mocha frappé.

I wake up around 4 am or 5 am, even on weekends. I take naps during the day whenever I feel tired. Energy is important!

You’ll feel great knowing you’ve done your top priority before anything else.

Write at Night

If you’re a night owl, take advantage of the time writing under the moonlight.

Instead of watching TV as soon as you return from work, write. Respectfully decline those text invitations from friends asking you for a night out.

What you do today leads to a better tomorrow.

Make Sacrifices

No TV, video games, or Youtube until you get your writing game in order. These distractions absorb the energy you can use for writing instead. However, you may use them as rewards once you’ve achieved your writing goals.

No social media. The newsfeed is a distracting devil. Cast it out of your life!

Do yourself a favor and embrace JOMO (Joy of Missing Out). If you have a book to get done, you’ll have to skip out a party or two.

Your friends can wait. They should understand you’re a writer after all.

Shorten E-mail Times

Do you need to check your e-mail five times a day? Most of it is probably not urgent.

Try checking your e-mail once or twice a day. Schedule it so you won’t feel like you’re missing anything.

Do Deep Work Writing

According to author Cal Newport, “Deep Work” is the ability to concentrate on a task for an extended time. It’s an underrated skill much needed in this ocean of distraction.

Here’s the deep work formula:

(Time spent) x (Intensity of Focus) = High-Quality Work

To accomplish deep work, try two to three hours of writing. I do three hours with a fifteen-minute break between every 90 minutes. Any other breaks during this period are bathroom and water breaks.


Creating a writing time is possible. You don’t have to spend months isolated in a log cabin in the Rockies to get things done (no matter how pleasant it sounds).
