When Life Gives You Lemons, Write Fanfiction

ci-fi writer N.K Jemisin became the first African-American to win three Hugo awards in a row for the Broken Earth trilogy. She wasn’t born writing amazing work. One time, Jemison went through a dark era as an early writer in grad school.

“I was miserable and lonely,” Jemisin states in The Atlantic. “I didn’t have a lot of friends, or stress relief.”

So how did she get her writing groove back? One answer: Anime. Jemisin started writing DragonBall Z fanfiction and grew from there. Was fanfiction the secret elixir for Jemisin’s overall writing success? Could it work for you?

What is Fanfiction?

Fanfiction is writing stories from established fandoms. Eager writers will flock to Fanfiction.net, Wattpad, or Archive of Our Own to fulfill their unanswered fandom wishes, whether it’s from Riverdale or Stranger Things. You have writers building worlds where Reylo (Kylo Ren & Rey) live happily ever after in a galaxy far, far away. Twilight’s Jacob and Edward hit it off instead of being romantically involved with Bella.

Authors Cassandra Clare and Neil Gaiman have both had their literary beginnings in fanfiction. Does it make you a better writer? Maybe so.

Benefits of Writing Fanfiction

Have you ever had a bad writing day? No creative juices flowing through your entire being? Maybe you’re just having a terrible day in general or a terrible week. Writing some harmless fanfiction can be a powerful stress reliever.

Fanfiction is a fun form of expressive writing. Studies have reported expressive writers have improved their health and productivity. Other fanfiction benefits include:

  • Better writing skills
  • Gaining new friends with similar interests
  • Breaking into new writing genres
  • Smashing writer’s block
  • Free-flowing imagination

Overall, there are some positives for writing those romantic Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy fanfics after all.

If you’re ever in a situation when life gives you lemons, write fanfiction. I had days where I felt like all my writing energy has been sucked out of me. My medicine: writing Overwatch fanfiction. Suddenly, I was capable of writing everything under the sun.

So go ahead; write that darn fanfiction! Let your inner writing nerd go free! You’ll be a happier person afterward.
