Yes, You Can Write a Short Story in a Day
Don’t you think you can write a short story every day? It’s possible. Imagine how much you’ll be able to publish. Fun, isn’t it?
Fahrenheit 451 author Ray Bradbury offered aspiring writers to write a short story per week:
“The best hygiene for beginning writers or intermediate writers is to write a hell of a lot of short stories. If you write one short story a week — it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start, but at least you’re practicing, and, at the end of the year you have 52 short stories, and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. Can’t be done.”
Writing a short story a week is a great deal. In a day, though? Whoa! It might be too much, especially if you have a full life with a demanding day job and kids (pets included).
However, if you can master writing a short story a day, you will know no bounds to writing.
A few months ago, I discovered a sweet article on daily short story writing from London writer Benjamin McEvoy. A lightbulb ignited in my head at the first words of his post:
“You write a short story the way you read a short story.
As quickly as possible.
The best way to read a short story is to read it in one sitting.”
